In the summertime, life feels less stressful. Kids are out of school, people go on vacation and things seem to move a little slower. But scientific research never slows down. Scientists are constantly working, year-round, to search for life-saving treatments and cures for dangerous diseases. And because research never takes a vacation, we encourage our donors not to take a vacation from their blood donations.
When you donate blood at BSC, your donation goes to scientists who are researching deadly illnesses, such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. These scientists need a constant supply of blood to test the new drugs and devices they’re developing. Some of this blood for research comes from healthy donors and some of it comes from people who have the diseases that researchers are studying. For example, scientists who are researching lupus treatments use blood donated by people who have lupus. Typically, people donate blood less frequently in the summer than they do the rest of the year. That’s not terribly surprising, because people tend to use these months to go on vacations with family, friends and loved ones. Even when they’re not on vacation, many people tend to spend their summers in “vacation mode,” taking a break from some of life’s regular responsibilities.
And we understand! We love a day at the beach or a trip to the pool as much as anyone else! And we want you to enjoy every moment of your summer. We also want you to remember, while you’re scheduling outdoor concerts, softball games, and backyard barbeques, to schedule a blood donation at BSC!
Even if you’re busy, you can still find time to donate blood! An average whole blood donation takes just 15 minutes, which leaves you plenty of time to work on your tan!

Your blood has value for our research partners, which is why when you donate blood at BSC, you get paid. That’s true in the summer, and all year-round!
In addition, if you donate regularly, researchers might specifically request your blood! When that happens, you get a special “request bonus!”
And don’t forget, you can also use our referral program to make extra money. For every new donor you bring in to BSC, you’ll earn an additional $25 bonus after their first blood donation. There’s no limit to the number of people you can refer, so submit your referrals here!
